Compare that to an exterior combustion engine, where gasoline is burned beyond your engine, including the energy produced from that burning up is what powers it. Steam engines will be the best exemplary case of this. Coal is usually burned beyond the engine, which heats drinking water to create steam, which powers the engine after that.
In EGR a specific part of exhaust gases is directed back again to the cylinder mind, where they are combined with the fuel-air combination and enter the combustion chamber. The recirculated exhaust gases provide to lessen the temp of combustion, a condition that favors the lower creation of nitrogen oxides as combustion items (though at some lack of engine effectiveness).
